Great Arts and Crafts Ideas for St. Patrick's Day!

Rainbow Mobiles
What you'll need:
  • 1 paper plate
  • Paper streamers or wide ribbon in rainbow colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple)
    OR
    Craft paint in rainbow colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple)
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue
  • Piece of ribbon for hanging
  • Shamrock garland OR cut your own shamrocks from green construction paper 
How to make it:
  1. Cut the paper plate in half.
  2. Cut a 40-inch length of streamer in each color.
  3. Cut each length up the middle to create two long strips of each color.
  4. Reserve one set of rainbow color strips for another project or for a second Rainbow Mobile.
  5. Use one strip of each color. Glue the red streamer strip around the top curve of the paper plate. Make sure to center the streamer so you have equal lengths hanging off each side.
  6. Repeat with each color, moving your way down from red to orange, then yellow, green, blue and lastly purple.
  7. Add one thin purple strip to the back of the plate to fill the gap in the center.
  8. Tie a piece of ribbon into a knot, then glue to the back of the plate to use as a hanger.
 
Paper Plate Shamrock 
What you'll need:
  • 3  paper plate
  • Green Crayons
  • Green Construction Paper
  • White craft glue
  • Scissors 
How to make it:
  1. Color all three paper plates green.
  2. Cut a stem from the green construction paper.
  3. Glue the three paper plates together in a triangle type shape. Then glue the stem at the bottom.
 
Coffee Filter Shamrock
 What you'll need:
  • Coffee Filter
  • 2 Jars or Bowls
  • Yellow and Blue Food Coloring
  • Q-tips
  • Scissors
 How to make it:
  1. Cut the Coffee filter in the shape of a shamrock.
  2. Put water in two jars or bowls.
  3. Add yellow food coloring in one jar or bowl and blue in the other.
  4. Give the children Q-tips and let them mix the colors on the coffee filter. 
 
Lucky Leprechaun Hats
 What you'll need:
 
  • Paper Bowls
  • Green Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Hole Punch
  • Ribbon
  • Gold Glitter
How to make it:
  1. Have the children paint the backside of a paper bowl green.
  2. When they are dry, punch a hole in the rim of the bowl on each side.
  3. Lace the ribbon through each hole so you can tie the hat on.
 
Irish Flag
 What you'll need:
  • White, Green, and Orange Construction Paper
  • Glue
How to make it:
  1. Start with a sheet of white construction paper.
  2. Starting from the left side of the white construction paper, glue on 1/3 green construction paper, 1/3 white construction paper (you can just leave the white construction paper showing), and 1/3 orange paper.
 
 
Potato Person
 What you'll need:
  • Potato
  • Grass Seed
  • Soil
  • Small Cup
  • Scrape Paper
  • Glue
How to make it:
  1. Cut a good size raw potato in half and scoop out the potato flesh leaving a bowl.
  2. Fill the potato bowl with soil and sprinkle in the grass seed.
  3. Place the potato in a small cup to stand upright and decorate the front of the potato with eyes, nose, and mouth. 
  4. The grass will sprout and it looks like the silliest leprechaun!
 
 
Shamrock Necklace
 What you'll need:
  • Heavy White Paper
  • Glue
  • Gold Glitter
  • Hole Punch
  • Ribbon
How to make it:
  1. Trace a shamrock shape onto heavy white paper.
  2. Have children put glue where they want to sprinkle gold glitter on their shamrock.
  3. Let dry and then punch a hole in the top of the shamrock.
  4. Tie a ribbon through the hole to make a necklace that fits a child.
 
Green Shaving Cream Art
 What you'll need:
  • Shaving Cream
  • Green Paint
  • Paper
  • Paintbrush
How to make it:
  1. Add a few drops of green paint to the shaving cream. Not mixing in the paint in the shaving cream will give it a special look.
  2. Have the children use the shaving cream to paint with.
 
 
Leprechaun Binoculars
 What you'll need:
  • Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Green Paint
  • Stapler or Glue Gun
  • Yarn
How to make it:
  1. Take the two toilet paper rolls and staple or glue them together. 
  2. Punch a hole on each side of the tubes.
  3. Paint the tubes green and let dry.
  4. Tie yarn through the holes to fit around a child’s neck.
  5. Go in search of a leprechaun with your binoculars.
 
Blarney Stone
What you'll need:
  • Smooth Rocks
  • Paintbrush
  • Green and Gold Glitter
  • Glue
How to make it:
  1. Have each child find or bring a smooth rock from outside that they have found.
  2. Wash and dry the rocks.
  3. Using a paintbrush cover the rock with glue.
  4. Dip each rock in green and gold glitter or let kids sprinkle on the glitter.
  5. Let dry.
  6. You have a Blarney Stone for good luck!
