The Place Value Straw Game to 1,000
Before Playing:
1. You need 3 containers (they need to be about the size of a coffee can but make sure the edges are not sharp). One container is labeled with 1’s, the next has 10’s, and the last container is labeled 100’s.
2. You need to group straws together in 1’s, 10’s, and 100’s. Put them together with rubber bands (make sure kids are involved with the grouping).
Games:
1. The first person gets to add as many straws in the one, tens, and hundreds as they would like to.
2. The other person has to tell them how many straws are in the containers. If they get it right they get a point.
3. Then the other person gets to go they have to pick one container (1’s, 10’s, or 100’s). They take as many straws OUT or In as they want. Then they tell how many straws they added or took out. It must make sense with base ten so only 9 of any quantity can go in a container.
4. Other games that are more advanced would be to take out or add to more than one place value.
5. An easier game is make ONE quantity at a time.
